Kronau Curling Club History
The Kronau Curling Club started in Kronau in 1948 on two sheets of natural ice. A plough wind came through town in 1974 and destroyed the rink.
In 1974, Regina's own Highland Curling Club wanted to build a new rink. Kronau Curling Club dismantled their old rink, hauled each piece by grain truck back to Kronau where the three-sheet rink was reassembled in Kronau on the spot the rink sits in today. The volunteers built a lobby and lounge onto the front of the rink and the new facility opened in 1976. The rink has artificial ice and our curling season is from October to the end of March.
The rink is governed and operated by volunteers. In 2008 the board knew the building was aging and in dire need of major repair. The fundraising and construction work began in 2009 and in April 2010 the demolition to the lobby and lounge began. It was found then that the building was in worse shape than originally anticipated and the whole front had to be removed and shortly after that the foundation had to be removed as well as it was inadequate and did not meet today's safety and building codes. The costs tripled and the project was in jeopardy. Vale Potash Canada Ltd. gave the project a major contribution which made completion of the building possible. The Kronau Curling Club received funding from the Recreational Infrastructure Canada Program provincially in the amount of $180,796 and Federally in the amount of $104,323. The KCC volunteers through their Buy-a-Brick Program (corporate and individual donations/contributions) and through various fundraisers, other grants, etc. raised more than $430,000. Of that Vale Potash Canada Ltd. contributed $230,000.
Through an incredible amount of hard work, perseverance and constantly revising budgets and finding ways to reduce expenses the building opened at the end of January 2012. There is still work to be done but the building is being used for curling, community meetings/events, and it can be used for rentals throughout the year. And so begins a new chapter in Kronau Curling Club's history.
